FYI

so, J and I got married 8 years ago. At that time, our parents were nice enough to help us get our pantry stocked. My mom sent me with some of her stuff, and J's mom sent some of her items. Well fast forward 8.5 years to last night. I received a copper-bottomed pot for Christmas and the copper has a coating on top of it so it won't tarnish. I needed to soak the bottom of the pot in a mixture of hot water and baking soda to take off the coating. As I was doing this, I started reading the back of the baking soda box. You can use that stuff for tons of things. Laundry, cleaning tile and grout, even indigestion. The indigestion directions warned you to check the expiration date of the baking soda. I thought I would take a little look. Wow.

Yes, my baking soda expired in June of 1997. That was the summer of my sophomore year in high school. I just barely got my driver's license.

I started rummaging through my spice cupboard. I found the coolest thing ever. Check this out:

It just looks old, right? I have never used Cream Tartar for anything. I have no idea what this stuff is. I turned the tin upside down and holy crap - check out this expiration date:

Yeah, this stuff expired on July 20, 1978. This tin of cream tartar went bad over 30 years ago. I wasn't even a thought yet. My older sister was 2 months old.

My mom came over last night to play some games. I showed her the cream tarter and she laughed and laughed. She said she used to use that stuff to make homemade playdoh. She told me since I had kept it this long, I might as well keep it around - just for posterity's sake. I mean come on - who has a tin of some totally weird tarter concoction that's been around for over 30 years!

They're classics honey. We found some of this when my parents moved a few years ago. We emptied out the spices and kept the containers for decorations. Very funny.

That is too funny!

I love to use baking soda to clean sinks and grout, it is suppose to be better for the earth, and I only ever use tartar for play dough and jean campbells sugar cookies.....

You should give C the box when she gets married, just to keep it in the family :)

Too funny! We have weird random stuff from our parents, too. I've never even heard of the tartar stuff.
