I'm serious this time . . . .

I know I've threatened before, but this time I'm serious. I'm going private. I've done a horrible job keeping up with this blog. Mainly because (a) being a Mom is insanely busy; and (b) I feel a little creeped out making our lives so very public.

I want to do some redesigning and I've got a lot of fun pictures to add, but I don't feel comfortable doing any of that until I've made my blog private.

So if you're interested in keeping tabs on us, leave me a message and I will add you. I probably have your email address, unless you are visiting us from Nepal - and then I probably don't. So if you have reason to believe I don't know you personally, leave your email and maybe I will add you.

Bathroom Business

F met his preschool teacher for the first time on 9/6 during the annual preschool open-house. Miss L. is so sweet and kind. When she saw F, she knelt down in front of him, opened her arms and gave him a big hug. She told him how excited she was that he was in her class and that she couldn't wait to get to know him better.

The first words out of F's mouth?

"I can wipe my own bum."

My Dude is Preschool Bound

Holy crap - he's cute.

He did NOT want me to take his picture. I had to bribe him with chocolate cookies.

He did NOT spaz out (like his sister did) when it was time for me to leave. I was barely able to get him to pose for one last picture at the top of Miss Laurie's stairs. I was a little sad for about 3.5 nanoseconds until I realized that I only had to take one child to the grocery store. HEAVEN!

The Watcher

I like scary movies. I like scary books. I've liked them for a long, long time. I'm always on the look out for the next scary book/movie to come out. Consequently, I'm a jumpy person. Sneak up on me, and I might kill you. Every time J travels for work (which thankfully hasn't been for a long time) we practice loading the shotgun before he leaves. So, don't plan on trying to scare me when I'm home alone.

I don't like going downstairs by myself and if I find myself down there, alone, in the dark - I will finish whatever I'm doing in a calm manner but as soon as I hit those stairs to come back up, I'm full on sprinting to get away from whatever creepy thing is chasing me.

One time when I was 16 I was driving home late from being with friends. By the time I pulled up in front of my house I had totally convinced myself that IT (the clown) was in my backseat. I stopped the car at the curb, basically fell out of it, left the keys in the ignition and the door open, ran inside screaming and made my Step-Dad go outside and get my keys and shut the door.

Child-sized wheelchairs have a special place in my heart after watching Changeling. The OLD movie, not the Angelina Jolie one. I decided the only way to keep the imminent wheelchair attack at bay while going up the stairs in my house, was to chant this mantra before reaching the 3rd step: "wheelchair boy, wheelchair boy, wheelchair boy." I did this every single time I used the stairs at my house growing up. Special memory: again, it was late at night. I was home waaaaay later than I should have been. I was sneaking upstairs, trying to get past my parents' door without them hearing. I was tired and not giving wheelchair boy the respect that he demands and I did not repeat my mantra. As I reached the top step, I put my hand out to feel the wall so I didn't crash into it. I did not touch the wall. I touched the handle to the wheelchair. It was there, ready to take me back into the hell it came from. I screamed and fell backwards down the stairs with the wheelchair tumbling on top of me.

My parents rushed out of their room, flipped on the light, and found me - on the landing at the bottom of the stairs with the freaking vacuum on top of me. That little episode shortened my life by at least 10 years.

When baby M wakes up in the night, I scare myself almost every single time walking into his room. I saw my reflection out of the corner of my eye in a picture hanging up on his wall, and I almost had a heart attack. That's my main reason for wanting him to sleep through the night. I can deal with sleep deprivation, just not poltergeist.

Bottom line - I'm totally neurotic, but I can't stop.

Anyway, a few days ago I was driving with the kids at night, alone. It was about 10:00pm, so it was nice and dark. The kids were tired so they weren't saying much. I was thinking about whatever moms think about at 10:00pm after a long day of doing mom-stuff. F broke the silence by asking me if I ever saw that man that watches him at night in his room.

WTH????????????????????????

I asked him to repeat himself. Here's the gist of our conversation:

F: Sometimes at night, I see that man that watches me.
Me: Um, what?????
F: That guy that stays on the wall up high. He watches me. Sometimes he moves.
Me: This happens in your room?
F: Yeah. Sometimes when I'm asleep I open my eyes and I see him.
Me: This happens in your room, at our house, right now?
F: Yeah. He changes places. Sometimes he's in my room, sometimes he's not.
Me: *in almost a whisper: Can you see him now?
F: No, he stays at our house. He doesn't want to leave. Ever.
Me: *i have goosebumps at this point and i'm considering whether it would be acceptable to lose all composure and start hyperventilating with my children present since i am positive that my 3 year old is seeing some type of ghost/spirit/creepy thing that is taking up residence in my basement: Does this man ever talk to you?
F: No. But I talk to him sometimes. He just watches me. And follows me.
Me: *starting to wonder if this house was built on some type of ancient native-american burial ground. Does C ever see him?
F: Yeah. She's seen him. A lot.
Me: C???? What is your brother talking about?
C: Oh, he's just talking about Christopher Pop-n-Kins.
Me: BIG LONG EXHALE WHILE I TRY TO REMEMBER IF I HAVE A CHANGE OF SHORTS IN THE CAR.

Damn you Christopher Pop-n-Kins! When I see you this November, I'm gonna give you a piece of my mind.

Milford Mania

Every year since I was a little girl, my extended family on my Mom's side has been going down to Milford. The main point of the trip was to visit my Great Grandmother and spend some time in the desert. My Grandmother passed away last Fall, but the desert still calls our name and begs us to come and play. We always have so much fun.

Right before reaching Milford, we drive past the wind farm. It's beautiful in a sort of weird modern way. There are 97 huge windmills. Its somewhat hypnotizing to watch them turn. The energy the wind farm collects every year is equivalent to 370,000 barrels of oil.

The hotel we stay at has this awesome little 24-hour diner attached to it. It has some super good greasy-spoon type food and THE BEST CHOCOLATE SHAKE I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Seriously. It's worth the ride down there just for the chocolate shakes.
Here we are, in the car, eating treats and ready to start on our 3-hour journey to Milford:

Little M did pretty good. Those that know me personally, know that I have a serious problem with pacifiers. I just don't like them. However, I broke my no-pacifier rule for the ride down and back. M hates his carseat and nobody wants to listen to a screaming 4 month old for 3 hours straight. The pacifier helped. We arrived Friday night around 5:30pm and checked into our room. Hotel rooms are pretty high up on the list of things-that-make-my-kids-happy so they were stoked. I mean, come on - they can jump on the beds as much as they want, flip through like 2300 cartoon channels and run up and down the hall screaming. I'm sure all the other hotel guests loved us.

Cousins Brandon & Jordan, along with Uncle Rab and Aunt Dianne arrived next. My kids absolutely adore Brandon & Jordan. I don't think my kids let either one of them out of their sight the entire weekend. All C wanted to do was catch lizards with Jordan & Brandon.

Grandma & Grandpa Meow and Grandma & Grandpa Johnson arrived next.

Dub & Sweg were the last to get there. Apparently both their places of employment have yet to realize the importance of the annual Milford trip and the critical necessity of taking time off to get there. Whatev. And yep, Sweg is pulling his creeper face. Poor Dub. It must be hard living with him day after day.

Saturday morning, we made the obligatory cemetery stop to put flowers on relatives' graves and listened to my Grandpa J tell us stories of when he was a kid, growing up in Milford. This man is seriously amazing. His stories blow my mind. I am blessed to have him in my life.

Thankfully Uncle Mike & Cousin Spencer were able to drive down and made it just in time to hit up Newhouse, a little mining ghost town just outside of Milford. We used to be able to pull up right on top of a huge pile of tailings, but they have since locked us out. Lame. On that gate there was sign that was supposed to deter would-be trespassers. It said: "YOUR PICTURE HAS BEEN TAKEN," which made me laugh and did not stop any of us from crawling through the gate. So, if you see my picture on Utah's Most Wanted List for Abandoned Mine Trespassing - please notify me. Cousin Jordan promptly caught a big fat lizard:

After Newhouse we had lunch and then hit up what we have christened, the "Rocket Flats." Its basically the only place in all of Milford that doesn't have 400 mph winds ripping through it, which makes it perfect to launch rockets.

As soon as we pulled up, we spotted a gross little swampy pond FILLED with tadpoles & frogs. My kids went nuts. Cousin Jordan caught a few and soon C and F were pulling them up out of the water. The first time F caught a tadpole, he was so excited. All he could do was stutter over and over, "its soft, its soft, its soft." Grandma Meow had the insight to bring each of my kids a critter box. F filled his with tadpoles and frogs. I love these next two pictures. F can't decide if he's disgusted, enchanted or a mixture of the two.

Uncle Rab caught a blow snake soon after and C just loved it. She couldn't wait to hold it, which definitely proves the theory that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. F was a little more hesitant, but in the end we got him to hold the snake.

The Rocket Flats area is actually some type of gravel/sand pit that has really steeps sides made of sand/dirt. F took one look at the dirt and ran right for it. C and F kept really, really busy climbing the dirt wall while the rest of the group got in a little target practice.

And yes, eventually both of them fell face first into the dirt:

What was little M doing during all this? Mostly scowling at people and still not appreciating his carseat:

He was actually a great little buddy down there. He didn't fuss hardly at all. He loved seeing all the critters. He loved being passed around from relative to relative. He slept well at night. He's for sure a desert kid.

Now onto the rockets. About 5 years ago, J got the idea of bringing rockets down to Milford with us. The idea has stuck and has now become a Milford tradition. Its so much fun to see see them launch and even more fun to see the guys run after them through the sage brush. Grandma Meow gave J a six-foot rocket a few years ago for Christmas. This trip it made its maiden voyage.

We found this little buddy hiding under our car looking for some shade. Cousin Jordan gave him a drink of water and sent him on his merry way:

Rock Corral came next. It's made up of granite peaks and huge standing rocks. Oddly enough, we saw a group of about 15 wild turkeys cross the road on the way up there. I have never seen wild turkeys down there. Weird. Anyway, there are a ton of hiking trails and if you get up high enough, a ton of bat caves. C and F hiked up to the lowest one with us. It was fun, despite the stinging nettle (which none of us got into, thank goodness) and the trees covered in super sharp thorns. It is beautiful up there and really shows off the desert landscape.

Dub & Swegin were trying to get a cute picture in the mouth of this huge cave, but of course J had to be the creepy photo bomber. And C thought she heard a bat (which was really Cousin Brandon throwing a rock behind her).

We usually catch rabbits in the middle of the night by shining a spotlight into the sage brush, finding a rabbit, jumping out of the car, running towards the rabbit at full speed while screaming - but this year was a bust. We didn't catch single rabbit. And for those of you reading this and thinking that we end up hurting the rabbits - we don't. We are basically the desert cottontail advocates. We just like to see if we can catch them. Once we do, we take some goofy pictures and let the rabbits go. However, the rabbits must be getting smarter because we only saw one or two and didn't catch any. We usually catch around 10 or so. Here is a picture from a previous year's rendezvous:

However, the night was not totally uneventful. Jordan was getting a bit restless from the lack of rabbit activity, so he stuck out his hand out the window and caught a bunch of grasshoppers and proceeded to throw them in the backseat, where Dub, Swegin and I just happened to be sitting. Its totally not good to be sitting in a dark car and feel something crawling all over your legs. Dub DID NOT appreciate it. I'm getting the heebie jeebies just typing this.

And speaking of heebie jeebies - we rean into a swarm of mormon crickets. Totally uncool. They are so flipping gross. I'm not that squeamish when it comes to bugs - but these are ancient looking, totally huge and super creepy. *shudder.

On our way home we stopped in Eureka, which is THE MOST bizarre town I have ever passed through. Totally X-Files. Its a teeny tiny mining town with a ton of mines surrounding it. One abandoned mine is still uncovered, except for a criss-crossing pattern of rebar over the top of it. Its huge and over 2200 feet deep. We stopped to experience the creepiness of such a deep, dark hole in the earth. I swear to you, there has to be some seriously crazy stuff at the bottom of that thing.

Anyway, it took us a while to get home. 2 young kids + a baby = a lot of stops. However, we made it in one piece. We had a great, safe trip that my kids will remember for a long time.

You stay classy, Milford.

Cat Naps

Little M is teething. All my kids get their teeth sooooooooooo early. Both C and F had 4 teeth by now, so M is a little behind schedule. The kid is miserable. His naps are super crummy and way too short. Yesterday, I caught him catching a few z's on his play mat thing.

I bought this play mat when I was pregnant with C. Its been a great toy. It still looks like brand new. It was a good investment.

And yes, the thumb-sucking is going full force.

"Dopper" Bike

F has been using a hand-me-down bike. We replaced the pedals and got a sweet horn for it, but it just wasn't cutting it. The chain kept falling off and the training wheels that we put on it didn't fit right. F finally gave in and just started riding our old, rusty razor scooter. J and I decided that we needed to get this kid a bike.

His facial expression was priceless when he saw his new bike for the first time. At first he thought it was for the neighbor kid. Then he thought it was J's bike. When J assured him that it was for him - he smiled so big. I love this dude.

This morning {at 7:30am} he asked if he could ride his "stopper bike." However, when F says "stopper" it comes out as "dopper." I asked him if he meant his new bike and he said yes and then told me he calls it his dopper bike because it "has those one dopper things on top." Apparently, he is loving the hand brakes.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

I'm back. For a minute, anyway. I've got some stuff that is totally blog-worthy.

I'm taking the summer off

I haven't blogged in a long time. I've had plenty of blog-worthy events, just not the time to sit down and do it.

I turned 30. LAME.

Papa Barrow & H got married on 5/31. We are absolutely thrilled to welcome H to the family. She is awesome and so is her daughter E.

C graduated from Kindergarten. I can't dwell on this for too long because it starts to freak me out when I think about how fast this year has gone and how old my baby is getting.

We moved. We're loving it. You can't go wrong with a cul de sac filled with other kids and a big backyard.

Little baby M is HUGE. He looks just like me, which is rad, since my other two look exactly like their Dad. He's a great sleeper {with the exception of last week when he decided to wake up every 90 minutes all night long for 6 nights straight}. He loves when people talk to him and he loves to talk back. He has found his thumb and loves it just about as much as F does.

I have pictures commemorating all the above-mentioned events. However, I am taking the summer off. There are just too many other things to do!

Later!
